An Interview With John Cookson

Tell us what you do for a living.

I’m a Sales Consultant.

Why are you the right person for this job?

I see the bigger picture and relish building long term working relationships – The Change were founded in 1993 and continue to lead the independent market – without building such relationships and offering elite service as standard, we’d be just another pretender. I’m not a pretender.

What gets you up in the morning?

Four children and/or seven dogs usually.

Who helped you get to where you are today?

My family. In my younger years my parents supported and helped to guide me and now, as a father of four, my children and fiancé continue with the same levels of support.

What is the best or worst business advice you have received?

My Dad once told me to trust my doubts – in today’s times his words seem ever wiser.

What advice would you give to someone starting out today in IT?

Surround yourself with people you trust. Too many people will try to steal a living off your hard work.

What’s running on your smartphone?

I’m not really a snap-tweeter but I have Facebook and BBC Sport running currently.

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

I’m a big fan of the Dan Brown series but particularly enjoyed Angels and Demons.

And the best film you’ve ever seen?

The Lord of the Rings as a whole story for sure.

What would be your Desert Island MP3s?

I like a lot of music, it’s really varied but I’m listening to Paolo Nutini’s These Streets album a lot recently.

What temptation can you not resist?

My children and my dogs.

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

I had a Corsa as my first, I now have a BMW. I love them both for very different reasons. The Corsa was freedom and the BMW represents personal achievement and success. It also automatically calls an ambulance if I crash and seeing as I wrote my last car off….

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

A Golden Eagle in Alaska. I’d get to see a stunning landscape from a unique view – I’d also get to see the Aurora Borealis.

If you could take part in one event in the Olympics, which would you choose and why

Is dog sled racing still a Winter Olympic sport?

If you were facing awesome peril and impossible odds, which real or fictional person would you most want on your side and why?

Eivin Kilcher! A subsistence hunter/farmer who lives in Alaska. There can’t be much he couldn’t help with.

Who was the last person you hugged and why?

My fiancé as I left for work.

Have you ever met anyone famous, if so how?, if not who would you like to meet?

No one worth shouting about however I’d be really keen to meet Eivin Kilcher or Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
