An Interview with Matt Shinebourne

Tell us what you do for a living.

I’m the Sales Manager of The Change Organisation with a strong focus on growing and developing our new business team.

Why are you the right person for this job?

I have a broad range of experience having started from the bottom as a junior new business developer and I have the best track record at The Change for generating new business. I have a lot of managerial experience and I’m at the right time in my life for this role.

What gets you up in the morning?

I enjoy being at work. We have a fantastic culture on the sales floor, the banter, the hard work and the successes. The Challenge of being successful gets me up. Recently I have found my career very rewarding and challenging.

Who helped you get to where you are today?

Graham Burns (Chairman of The Change) played a big part in enabling me to understand the importance of integrity in business and of what it is to be a business man.

What is the best or worst business advice you have received?

The best advice I have received is to always be ethical and have integrity in business. The worst advice would be the idea that winning business is based on price.

What advice would you give to someone starting out today in IT?

I would tell them they need to be the person who wants it the most, who works the hardest and who is willing to listen and learn. They are the ones who succeed, the rest are just making up the numbers.

What’s running on your smartphone?

Chess, WhatsApp and Fantasy Football

Tell us something most people do not know about you?

I speak fluent Bahasa Indonesian

What goal do you have to achieve before you die, and why?

Making sure my kids have a foundation for their future in terms of education, personality and life skills to deal with an ever changing world. Life is hard and there are so many children growing up in this world without this support. The most important thing in my life is to make sure I do the best for my children

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

And the best film you’ve ever seen?

What would be your Desert Island MP3s?

Aretha Franklin, Big Daddy Kane and Bob Marley

What temptation can you not resist?

Having a good time with my friends

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

My first car was a Vauxhall Astra handed down from my Grandfather to my older brother and then handed down to me. I drove it until it literally had to be scrapped. Now I drive a Mercedes C250 AMG Sport so there’s quite a big difference

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

A lion, because they’re the king of the Jungle

If you could take part in one event in the Olympics, which would you choose and why?

The Decathlon, because Daly Thompson was my hero as a boy

If you were facing awesome peril and impossible odds, which real or fictional person would you most want on your side and why?

Achilles because he was the greatest warrior, immortal and a god. Hector is my favourite character out of the two and I aspire to be more like him, but Achilles killed Hector so if I was in awesome peril I think Achilles is the one to have by your side.
