An Interview With Simon Bethel

Tell us what you do for a living.

I am the Head of Audio Visual for The Change which means I oversee all things “AV” and work with the team to help build solutions, provide support and train our staff and customers in the solutions that we provide.

Why are you the right person for this job?

Being one of the more technical members of the team, and also having worked in both Sales and Purchasing for the company over my 13 years with The Change, I believe I am well placed to help the company move into what is a relatively new area for us by bringing my skill set and applying it to a new, interesting set of solutions – one that goes hand in hand with our core IT business.

What gets you up in the morning?

Literally speaking, if not my alarm then usually my body clock that has the uncanny ability to wake me up 10 mins before the alarm is due to go off… aside of that I honestly enjoy working at The Change and with the people we have here, some I have known since I started 13 years ago and I regard them as good friends of mine, we just happen to work together as well!

Who helped you get to where you are today?

Firstly I would say my parents, without their strong support I am not sure I would be the man I am today, secondly it would be the management team at The Change who have helped me through the varying roles that I have held here, the loyalty we have here is something that is very important to all of us and it helps everyone strive to succeed here.

What is the best or worst business advice you have received?

One that keeps coming back to me is “Efficient application of your time and energy is key in the work place” – pretty self-explanatory but it’s definitely one to keep in mind I think!  I cannot say I can think of any particular “bad” advice I’ve been given but everyone has their opinion on things, whether I think they are right or not is a different matter!

What advice would you give to someone starting out today in IT?

The IT world, the different technologies and how we interact with them change very quickly and I think it’s important for anyone starting out to try and be aware of as much of these changes as possible, the more info you have about the products you deal with, be that in sales, purchasing, etc the more productive you will be in my opinion

What’s running on your smartphone?

Facebook, Whatsapp, Weather Pro, Twitter and Clash Royale

Tell us something most people do not know about you?

I used to work in what was the biggest night club in the southeast called Amadeus in Strood when I was younger as a Lighting Jock (the guy that works with all the clubs lighting, lasers, etc) which was a fun job, a little different to what I do know but there are more similarities than you might imagine.

What goal do you have to achieve before you die, and why?

To be a successful individual in all elements of my home life and business life, in my opinion they both need to be in sync wherever possible to help each other to grow!

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

I don’t really read books in all honesty, the thing I read the most would be my ipad subscription to Evo, a car magazine.  That and a fair bit of industry news to try and keep myself up to date on everything that’s happening in our IT/AV world.

And the best film you’ve ever seen?

I love watching a good film but couldn’t realistically give you just 1 that I would say is the best!  Some of the better ones would be Shawshank Redemption, the Transformers films, the Matrix films, The Equaliser, Anchorman, Godfather, plus many others (I don’t mind the odd “Despicable Me film either…)

What would be your Desert Island MP3s?

My music tastes vary massively, I am a fan of groups like Foo Fighters, Oasis, Bring me the Horizon but then I love a lot of dance music, house, RnB, etc so it would have to be a mixture of the above.

What temptation can you not resist?

Going out for a curry, doesn’t take much to convince me to do that!

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

I had a little red Vauxhall Nova 1.2 as my first car, now due to the mileage that I do each day I need a diesel so I have a BMW 318D which is definitely better than the Nova!  To be fair though being my first car it did teach me a lot about driving!

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

Being some sort of eagle would be cool I think, being able to fly about and survey everything below, either that or a nutty dog – they always seem to be having a good time!

If you could take part in one event in the Olympics, which would you choose and why?

Maybe the Triathlon because if I was to compete I would definitely have to get in shape for that!

If you were facing awesome peril and impossible odds, which real or fictional person would you most want on your side and why?

Probably someone like Ironman, he seems to be able to get out of most scrapes one way or another!

Who was the last person you hugged and why?

One of my 6 nephews, Oliver who I was with at one of my best friend’s daughter’s birthday party yesterday to say goodbye to him

Have you ever met anyone famous, if so how?, if not who would you like to meet?

I met the odd Z lister when I worked at Amadeus but that was nothing particularly special (anyone remember Billy Piper trying to make it as a singer will understand), I would like to meet Dave Grohl and go for a night out with him, that would be something to remember!
