An Interview With Riki Smith

Tell us what you do for a living.

I am a Senior Account Manager at The Change.

Why are you the right person for this job?

I am a strong individual, not easily lead. My job requires a person who is able to think for themselves and see through the corporate BS and vendor attempts to monopolise the UK market. I am an agent providing choice in a free market.

What gets you up in the morning?

Always Siri. Never Cortina.

Who helped you get to where you are today?

My parents. My Dad grew up with nothing – he would take the smallest of opportunity and make something of it. I inherited his ‘Midas Touch’ and am always looking for the angle. And my Mum would always be pushing me to be the best I possibly could be. She taught me to dress well too – I love that she made me have pride in my appearance.

What is the best or worst business advice you have received?

When you’ve got all the dough coming in, you need a good woman to make bread of it.

What advice would you give to someone starting out today in IT?

I’ve seen a lot of Sales guys fail who wanted to ‘talk’ from day one. My advice would be to ‘listen’ until you are ready to ‘talk’.

What’s running on your smartphone?

My two favourites – Spotify & AJ Bell.

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

Guinness World Records 2002.

And the best film you’ve ever seen?

Goodfellas is a film that I could watch over and over again but best film would have to be Shawshank Redemption. That’s a great one for getting the emotions going.

What would be your Desert Island MP3s?

A dictated version of the book, “How to Build Rafts for Dummies”.

What temptation can you not resist?

Hiding the remote for the TV when leaving a hotel room.

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

A Vauxhall Corsa. I now drive a 2015 E Class coupe. The comparison would be the equivalent of putting a child’s electric car up against the Batmobile.

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

Wouldn’t mind being a “fly” on the wall in our Company Meeting Room sometimes. You see some serious guys walk into there.

If you could take part in one event in the Olympics, which would you choose and why

Boxing. Some of the best Boxers this world has ever seen came through the Olympics – Ali, Tyson, Lewis and our very own Anthony Joshua.

If you were facing awesome peril and impossible odds, which real or fictional person would you most want on your side and why?

I’d be Bubba to Forest Gump. That man would do anything for Bubba.

Who was the last person you hugged and why?

My beautiful Fiancé, Danielle. Before work this morning and every morning. She’s the reason I work hard.

Have you ever met anyone famous, if so how?, if not who would you like to meet?

I asked Craig Bellamy if he was Craig Bellamy in a Nike Shop in Florida once. He said “Yes”. Standing there with a box of Nikes in one hand and the other hand on my hip, I just squinted my eyes and nodded like ‘yeh I thought so’. Nothing else was said.
