An Interview With Mel Stevens

Tell us what you do for a living.

I am a sales consultant

Why are you the right person for this job?

Because I work hard, have a thick skin-although hopefully while maintaining my youthful glow 😉 and I love what I do.

What gets you up in the morning?

My Alarm clock, family a cup of tea and my straighteners, without them I couldn’t face leaving the house in the morning.

Who helped you get to where you are today?

My nan who is always there when I need her and taught me to believe in myself-she’s my hero!

What is the best or worst business advice you have received?

My Dad found out that I had been ditching college to go down the pub with my performing arts friends. He drew a dotted line on a piece of paper and asked me to sign my name, I looked at him like he was crazy but did as he had asked. “ Welcome to your new life Mel” he said. “signing your name every 2 weeks for your GIRO” Well I wasn’t having that! So I proved him wrong, just like he had planned. I will be using this one on my own children if they need a kick up the bum. Not exactly business advice but made me determined to succeed.

What advice would you give to someone starting out today in IT?

Be prepared to work hard, this is an extremely crowded industry and to find a place in it can seem a monstrous task at times. Stay positive, persevere, and listen to advice from your peers.

What’s running on your smartphone?

Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram

Tell us something most people do not know about you?

I got the part of a librarian orang-utan in a play when I was 16. I was the only one who auditioned! I don’t think there was anyone else silly enough to audition.

What goal do you have to achieve before you die, and why?

To travel the world when my children have grown and flown with my partner. Go back to acting like teenagers and maybe do some arthritic backpacking.

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

Ok I face a dilemma here, do I tell the truth or make up some sophisticated novel I have read?? OK I will be honest…..i really enjoyed the Twilight Saga and read them multiple times. Go Team Edward!!

And the best film you’ve ever seen?

The Green Mile has got to be up there as one of my favourites, I pretty much start crying as soon as it starts.

What would be your Desert Island MP3s?

  • Prince and Rosie Gaines- Nothing compares to you
  • Michael Jackson-Give in to me
  • Envogue- Don’t let go

What temptation can you not resist?

Cheese- I love it!

What was your first car and how does it compare with what you drive now?

My first car is the car I drive now, although I have dreamt of driving a Bugatti…does that count?

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

A Giraffe- so I can see the weekend coming before everyone else.

If you could take part in one event in the Olympics, which would you choose and why?

Relay- I was good at this at school

If you were facing awesome peril and impossible odds, which real or fictional person would you most want on your side and why?

Iron Man- He would make me laugh in perilous situations and blow up all the bad stuff. He’s also extremely charismatic and handsome which helps.

Who was the last person you hugged and why?

My children this morning before I left for work.

Have you ever met anyone famous, if so how?, if not who would you like to meet?

I have met the fame academy reject, Lemar. Barry from Eastenders and Bob Geldof.
